Loke Orders Probe Into Deadly Three Vehicle Crash In Ayer Keroh
Transport Minister Anthony Loke has instructed the Road Transport Department to immediately investigate the deadly three-vehicle crash which left seven dead and 33 others injured.
The accident involved a tour bus carrying 27 passengers, a trailer and a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV).
“Preliminary probe by the authorities found the accident occurred after the trailer’s tyre got detached on the highway, resulting in the tour bus trying to avoid it crashing into three vehicles moving in the opposite direction.
“I have instructed RTD’s Enforcement Division to immediately probe the matter and take action against the trailer company and tour bus operator involved,” he said on Facebook today.
Earlier today, Malacca Fire and Rescue Department director Mohd Pisar Aziz said the accident occurred last night at KM204 of the North-South Expressway (Plus) northbound - near the Ayer Keroh Rest and Service Area.
Those who lost their lives were three men, three women and a baby.
"Five of the victims were the driver and passengers of the MPV, comprising two men, two women, and a baby.
“The other two killed were the tour bus driver and a female passenger on the bus,” he was reported as saying.
On that note, Loke conveyed his condolences to the families who lost their loved ones on behalf of his ministry.
“And the RTD will continue to enforce its regulations on heavy vehicles strictly to ensure the safety and security of all motorists,” he added.
‘Set up special task force’
Loke’s predecessor Wee Ka Siong urged the government to establish a special task force to investigate the deadly accident.
“My condolences to the family members of the victims involved in the road accident. This incident is deeply saddening for all Malaysians, including myself.
“I hope that the relevant authorities will establish a task force or a special team to investigate this incident more thoroughly, and it is crucial to ensure that such incidents do not happen again,” he said on Facebook today.
Wee Ka SiongOverall, the Ayer Hitam MP said that based on a special report by Sinar Harian recently, Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri mentioned that the authorities had recorded 825 fatal accidents involving lorries in the first 10 months of this year alone.
“And this is a very worrying trend,” he said.
Puteri Umno chief Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi also urged the authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly and take action if there are elements of negligence.
“We must ensure transportation companies keep their vehicles in good condition so that it will not cause accidents,” she said. - Mkini
