Let Defendants Have Their Day In Court Over 1mdb Money Says Ppbm
PPBM legal bureau secretary Mior Nor Haidir Suhaimi says the MACC’s suits to recover RM270 million from 41 defendants should not be settled out of court.PETALING JAYA: PPBM wants the government to go through the court process to recover RM270 million from 41 defendants, including Umno and several other Barisan Nasional component parties
PPPBM legal bureau secretary Mior Nor Haidir Suhaimi said the forfeiture suit must be put to test in court to determine whether the application is proper
“The rule of law must be enforced and the defendants must fight it out in court,” he told FMT in a text message
Mior Nor said this in response to suggestions by three lawyers in a FMT report today that the individuals and entities negotiate out-of-court settlements with the government
They said the defendants could pay an agreed amount to avoid a protracted legal battle and save legal fees and the court’s time
Mior Nor also said the Registrar of Societies (RoS) has the power to query and suspend the activities of Umno pending investigations
Meanwhile, Perak PPBM Armada (youth wing) has lodged a report with RoS following reports that RM212 million of 1MDB funds was transferred to Umno and individuals linked to the party
Its chief Mubin Salleh said the alleged illegal transfer of public funds to recipients of the party was an abuse of power
“We call on RoS to act as there must be transparency and integrity in the conduct of political activities,” he said in a Facebook posting
Last week, MACC chief Latheefa Koya said suits had been filed under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 to recover RM270 million from 41 defendants
MACC believed the sum was transferred from the bank account of former prime minister Najib Razak
In addition to Umno, the 41 defendants included Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah and MCA, foundations, companies as well as Persatuan Kebajikan Islam dan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Pekida). - FMT
