Lecturer Faces Probe For Allegedly Touching On Sensitive Issues
A video clip of a lecture in a Klang Valley college has been widely shared for its alleged racial content.PETALING JAYA: An investigation has begun into a widely-shared video clip of a lecturer allegedly touching on sensitive issues during one of her classes.
The education department for polytechnics and community colleges said it viewed such incidents seriously and would not compromise with those who tried to smear its reputation, deliberately or not.
“We would like to stress that polytechnic and community colleges were open to people of all races in Malaysia,” it said in a statement tonight.
It is believed that the department was referring to the video in which a lecturer talks about the three main racial groups in Malaysia and how the nation’s politics revolved around race.

Former education minister Maszlee Malik said the lecture, at a college in the Klang Valley, contained too much racial politics and was “somewhat parochial”. The topic Ethics and Civilisation was a compulsory subject but the lecture “went way off topic”.
He urged the lecturer to give an explanation for deviating from the syllabus.
Some social media users have come to the lecturer’s defence, claiming her talk was taken out of context, and urging the person who posted the video to post the entire lecture.
Separately, Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim of the Parent Action Group for Education said the lecturer appeared to be conducting her lesson from inside a vehicle, adding that it seemed unprofessional.
She also told FMT that what the lecturer was saying in the video seemed to have deviated from the topic of ethics and civilisation.
“Lecturers usually have notes to refer to and slides to ‘share screen’ with undergraduates if a lecture is properly prepared. Lecture notes, if there were any, should have been the focus and guide for the lecturer to ensure she does not go astray,” said Noor Azimah.
She said parents expected lecturers to be of high quality and possessing the ability to speak about a dedicated topic in depth.
She pointed out that the viral video was merely an extract of the entire lecture, which she said appeared to have been lengthy. - FMT
