Kula Corrects Pm On Malaysia S 1st Tvet Institution
Former human resources minister M Kula Segaran says the prime minister should admit and rectify his mistake regarding Malaysia’s first TVET institution. (Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: A DAP MP has corrected Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s mistake on Malaysia’s first technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institution.
Ipoh Barat MP M Kula Segaran said it was “surprising and ridiculous” that Ismail had mistakenly called Politeknik Ungku Omar the earliest institution to provide TVET education since 1969 when declaring June 2 as National TVET Day.
“The first institution to provide TVET education in the country would be Institut Latihan Perindustrian (ILP) Kuala Lumpur, located in Kuchai Lama,” the former human resources minister said in a statement.
He said the institute was established in 1964 under the labour department (JTM) and the human resources ministry (the then manpower department and labour ministry) and was the first institute set up by the government to conduct formal vocational training.

“It is unfortunate that Ismail was not advised by the human resources ministry about this fact and completely disregarded the institute’s rich history,” he said.
Kula urged the prime minister to admit and rectify his mistake.
Yesterday, Ismail also said the National TVET Council’s TVET empowerment agenda had outlined several high-impact strategies and initiatives to strengthen the country’s vocational education.
He also announced the implementation of a scholarship programme specifically for B40 students pursuing studies in TVET at public higher learning institutions this year. - FMT
