Fifth-generation Covid-19 infections came from a Kuching church event and a wedding in Bangi, Selangor, says the health director-general.PUTRAJAYA: A church assembly in Kuching, Sarawak, and a wedding in Bangi, Selangor, were the two clusters that contributed to a dramatic increase in the number of Covid-19 infections, Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said today
These two clusters of infections were among the largest linked to large gatherings after the tabligh assembly at Sri Petaling mosque in Kuala Lumpur on Feb 27-March 1
The Kuching church assembly resulted in 83 infections, with two deaths, while the Bangi wedding resulted in 88 infections, with no deaths
Noor Hisham had previously stated that 62% of cases up to late March had been from the Sri Petaling event, with about 1,000 cases tested positive
He said the Kuching church programme was held over three days
“So far, 83 people have been confirmed positive for Covid-19 from this cluster, with two deaths (case number 358 and case number 2471), five critical cases are in the intensive care unit, and 50 are being treated in hospital, 24 cases under observation in the quarantine centre and one case has been discharged after full recovery,” he said
He said the Bangi wedding cluster of infections later developed into fifth generation infections
“As of April 6, 2020, 88 cases have been confirmed positive from this cluster, including one case which is being treated in the intensive care unit. However, there were no deaths reported linked to this cluster.”He said both clusters involved fifth generation Covid-19 infections
He urged the public not to discriminate against or blame any patient or group of people connected to clusters of Covid-19 infections
“Do not stigmatise them. What is important is that we help to detect and treat infections among those affected, their families and contacts,” he said. - FMT
