(Bernama pic)IPOH: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) anticipates an additional 2,000 passengers a day will use the KTM Komuter Utara train service from its three stations in Ipoh, Sungai Siput and Kuala Kangsar to the Butterworth station and its intermediate stations.
KTMB chief corporate officer Suhaimi Yaacob said previously more than 1,000 passengers were recorded using the electric train service (ETS) at the three stations.
“We expect this Komuter train will also be used by students since the journey is short and fast,” he said.
Suhaimi said this at the 2023 KTMB Open Day programme in conjunction with Malaysia Day celebrations, also attended by Perak executive councillor Loh Sze Yee at the Ipoh railway station here today.
Suhaimi said the current frequency of trains can accommodate as many as 450 passengers per hour during peak hours. At other times, a train will arrive every two hours.
The frequency of trains will be increased if there is higher user demand for the northern route.
Loh said the transport ministry and Railway Assets Corporation are studying the upgrading works that need to be carried out at stations in Perak to provide more comfortable facilities for commuters.
The journey from Butterworth station to Ipoh station takes 1 hour 56 minutes, with an adult fare of RM12.80 one-way. The concession fare for children, the elderly and the disabled (OKU) is RM6.40 one-way.
The first train from Ipoh to Butterworth station leaves at 4.40am, while that from Butterworth to Ipoh station at 5.30am. The last train will leave from Ipoh station at 6.35pm. From the Butterworth station, the last train will be at 7.10pm. - FMT
