APART from having to brace for road closures and diversions from today (Oct 23) till Oct 28 (Tuesday) in conjunction with the 47th ASEAN Summit, Klang Valley folks should also he bracing themselves for intermittent rallies to protest the presence of VVIP Domald Trump who has confirmed his attendance at the event.
Even before the US President’s touch down on Sunday (Oct 26), PAS Youth has lined up a solidarity march to the US Embassy in Jalan Tun Razak from Menara Tabung Haji after this Friday’s (Oct 24) prayers to tell the former that he is not wanted in Malaysia.
“Since Trump (first) took office in the US (Jan 2017-Jan 2021), nearly US$12 bil in weapons have been sold to Israel through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme,” the Islamist party’s youth wing penned on its Facebook (FB) page.
“And now, under the Trump and Joe Biden administrations, over US$21.7 bil in military aid is flowing to kill Palestinian children and destroy the land of Gaza.
“So, what more reason do we’ve to allow Trump to show up on our beloved Malaysian soil?”
Added PAS Youth” We’ll not remain silent until Al-Aqsa is liberated! We’ll not remain silent until Palestine is free! We’ll not remain silent if Gaza continues to bath in blood.”
Apart from PAS Youth, NGO Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (Malaysia) a.k.a. BDS Malaysia is also drumming up support for its “Trump Not Accepted in Malaysia” rally slated for this Sunday (Oct 26) at Ampang Park from 9am to 12 noon.
Interestingly, the non-violent Palestinian-led movement went a step further to equip rally participants with a handy what-to-do list alongside a hotline QR code in the event that they are (i) questioned by the police; (ii) detained by the police; and/or (iii) required to give a police statement.
“Don’t talk to the police without the presence of lawyer. You’ve the right to seek legal advice beforehand,” stated BDS Malaysia which will spearhead the 25-NGO rally.
Meanwhile, road closures from Oct 23 to Oct 25 (today to Saturday) will be for preparation and a dry run before the rolling closures for the actual summit which will be held for three days from Oct 26 to Oct 28 (Sunday to Tuesday), according to social media posts by the Royal Malaysian Police and Home Ministry.
Actual road closures and diversions will be conducted in stages from Sunday (Oct 26) involving six major expressways and 25 roads to facilitate the 47th ASEAN Summit.
A number of world leaders are expected to attend the summit, including US President Donald Trump, Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, among others.
China’s Premier Li Qiang and Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak are also expected to attend.
Leaders from the region – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Singapore PM Lawrence Wong, Cambodian PM Hun Manet, Myanmar junta chief Min Aung Hlaing, Vietnamese PM Pham Minh Chinh, Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Laotian PM Sonexay Siphandone and Timor-Leste PM Jose Alexandre Gusmao will also be present.
PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had previously stated that the 47th ASEAN Summit and related summits are expected to be among the largest in the regional bloc’s history. – Focus Malaysia
