Kg Majidee Folk Seek Freehold Status For Their Village
An association for Kampung Melayu Majidee house and land owners in Johor plans to submit an appeal letter to the state government tomorrow, seeking to change the leasehold status of their Malay reserve land homes to freehold.
Abdul Rahim Md Shariff, the chairperson of Kampung Melayu Majidee Villagers and Land Owners Welfare Association, said the letter will be hand-delivered to Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi instead of going through a third party.
ADS“After the issue came into the news (on Sunday), I received a call later that night from state exco member Hairi Mad Shah, who is in charge of the Johor Youth, Sports, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Committee.
“He said the menteri besar had asked him to gather details about our request, so we are going to prepare the letter and deliver it to the menteri besar in person tomorrow, as he has a ‘Semarak Subuh’ event at the Nurul Ta’zim KDSM Mosque.
“So we plan to go there in the morning to deliver the document to the menteri besar, easier that way,” he said when contacted by Malaysiakini.
According to Rahim, they have made many efforts to draw attention to the issue, including by submitting an official application to Onn Hafiz in Sept last year, but to no avail.
A letter requesting an appointment with the menteri besar that they sent on Jan 27 was also unanswered, he added.
Previously, it was reported that over 40,000 Kampung Melayu Majidee residents in Johor Bahru were in a limbo as the state government had not given an answer about the status of their village land, which is on a 99-year leasehold.
Most of them had lived in the village since the 1950s and are worried about losing their inherited houses when the lease expires in 2053.
