Kelantan Govt Urges Public To Be Wary If Visiting Sg Golok After Attack
The Kelantan government has advised the public to be cautious and follow the instructions of security forces if they intend to visit Sungai Golok, Thailand.
Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Fadzli Hassan issued the advisory following an attack on a security control post at the Sungai Golok district office yesterday, stating that such visits may be risky.
“We do know that a lot of Kelantanese go over to Sungai Golok to buy food or to break fast with family and friends every Ramadan. But it’s better we go back to our ‘kampung’ or gather at home to break fast together,” he said when contacted today.
He added that the public should prioritise their safety and need to be cautious in deciding whether to visit the neighbouring country.
Security boosted
Police have also tightened security along the Malaysia-Thailand border following a bomb explosion in Pekan Sungai Golok, southern Thailand, yesterday.
Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said the police are closely monitoring developments in Narathiwat province and have immediately enforced strict security measures until the situation is deemed safe.
He said General Operations Force (GOF) personnel stationed at the border have been instructed to heighten their readiness level and strengthen security at GOF posts and along Sungai Golok to prevent any unwanted elements from entering Malaysia.
“In addition, the Strike Force Company and Battalion Intelligence teams have been ordered to intensify patrols at illegal crossing points and ‘hot spots’ along Sungai Golok,” he told Bernama today.
Razarudin emphasised that Malaysian police are conducting round-the-clock security monitoring at police posts and for personnel as an additional precaution.
Yesterday, Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat confirmed that no Malaysians were among the casualties of the shooting and bomb explosion in Sungai Golok.
