Kampung Baru Issue Could Take A Decade Says Johari

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is reported to have ordered a delay in the redevelopment of Kampung Sungai Baru in Kampung Baru.PETALING JAYA: A reported delay in a contentious redevelopment project in Kampung Sungai Baru has turned the issue critical, says Titiwangsa MP Johari Ghani of Umno.
“Many do not understand the real issue regarding Kampung Sungai Baru,” he told FMT.
Residents may have to wait for over a decade for the project to be completed following a reported postponement ordered by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
“This is a very complex issue which stemmed from the failure of the developer, the then elected representative, and the federal territories ministry to coordinate the redevelopment project prior to getting residents to move out in 2019,” said Johari.
He was responding to a Malaysiakini report that Anwar had ordered the redevelopment project to be postponed to an as-yet-undetermined date. The delay was confirmed by Anwar’s political secretary Azman Abidin, the report said.
Azman was quoted as saying that the deal was to enable a renegotiation with residents and interested parties to find a solution to issues raised by the residents.
Johari said that the developer should be blamed for moving out more than 90% of owners of the flats since 2019 despite failing to get the approval from every resident.
All these owners who moved out were still waiting for their new homes from the developer, he said.
Johari said the project had yet to begin as the remaining owners did not agree to the valuation figure proposed by the Valuation and Property Services Department, which forms the basis of the amount of the compensation they would receive.
A majority have gone to court to seek a higher rate of compensation after shifting to transit homes under a land acquisition exercise that involved 67 terrace houses and 14 apartment blocks.
Johari said residents who have moved out could sue the developer for failing to provide them with their new homes on schedule. - FMT
