Ka Siong Jeck Seng S Post Taken Out Of Context Mca Not Opposing Jawi
TG PIAI POLLS | MCA president Wee Ka Siong today claimed the party's Tanjung Piai by-election candidate Wee Jeck Seng's Facebook post about Jawi was "taken out of context"
Jeck Seng's post, which was only written in Chinese, had questioned if voters wanted Jawi and the Malay Dignity Rally before asking voters to vote against Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his Bersatu party's "racism"
"MCA's position is that it should not be compulsory... MCA has never objected to khat Jawi (Jawi calligraphy)
"To suggest that voting for Jeck Seng means an objection to Jawi is a political manoeuvre and dirty political tactics
"They have taken things out of context and it should not happen," he told a press conference at the Pontian MCA office this evening
Ka Siong singled out Malaysiakini over the report on the Facebook post, which Malaysiakini had translated from Chinese to Bahasa Malaysia
Jeck Seng was notably absent from the press conference
When asked about his absence, Ka Siong said Jeck Seng was still shaking hands with voters
"You miss him and want to see his face?" he asked
When pointed out that Jeck Seng was in the best position to explain his own Facebook post, Ka Siong said he can speak on the former’s behalf
"This, 100 percent the party president can speak on behalf of the candidate. Why not
"And he is following the party's line. What's wrong with that
"So I appeal to Malaysiakini to report in the context where what I said represents the party and our position has been consistent since day one
"We are not like them (government) where they say one thing to the Chinese community but say another thing to the Malay community," he said
The MCA president also declined to go into detail about the claim by DAP's Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin that Jeck Seng, during his time as the Labuan Port Authority chairperson, saw the agency splurge RM343,180.50 on renovations for a Kuala Lumpur office that remains vacant
Jeck Seng also reportedly committed to a three-year tenancy for the office that would amount to RM526,836.96
The auditor-general's report had in 2017 highlighted the splurging and called it a "waste of public funds"
"Just ask the authorities to investigate if there's any element of abuse of power or corruption. Don't smear the candidate, okay? It's grossly unfair
"If a report came out in 2017, why is the question being asked in 2019 and not at that time
"When Jeck Seng becomes a candidate, all the history that has never been an issue becomes an issue," he said
He described it as "black-ops" and urged those with evidence to lodge a police report
Jeck Seng had previously also declined to comment on the matter. - Mkini
