Justice Nazlan Files Police Report Denying Rpk S Claim Of Unexplained Wealth
Court of Appeal judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali has lodged a police report over a posting by Malaysia Today author Raja Petra Kamarudin alleging that he had unexplained wealth.
The posting made on April 19 claimed that Nazlan was being investigated for over RM1 million he allegedly received from 1MDB-linked fugitive Low Taek Jho, who is better known as Jho Low.
According to a statement by the Federal Court chief registrar's office, Nazlan, in his police report, denied the allegations as false and malicious.
"(The posting) intends to smear Nazlan's credibility as a court of appeal judge and interfere with the justice system and judiciary," the statement said.
The report urges police to investigate the matter under Section 500 of the Penal Code for Defamation and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.
Meanwhile, the Federal Court chief registrar's office said it viewed such accusations and comments seriously.
"(This office) reminds the public that accusations against the judiciary aimed at disrupting cases that are on trial are sub judice," it said.
Nazlan was the trial judge that convicted former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak over the RM42 million SRC International corruption case.
Najib and his legal team are trying to discredit Nazlan - claiming the latter had an undisclosed conflict of interest.
This is as the judge used to be a general counsel of Maybank, and his tenure coincided with the time when the commercial bank issued a loan to SRC's parent company, 1MDB.
Najib is hoping this new evidence can secure him a fresh trial. - Mkini
