Just Honour The Worker Recruitment Pact Says Indonesian Envoy
Use of the Maid Online System means all provisions of the MoU are being bypassed, said the Indonesian ambassador to Malaysia.PETALING JAYA: Indonesia hopes for just one thing from a meeting of Malaysian ministers tomorrow to discuss an Indonesian freeze on sending workers to Malaysia.
“Our position is simple and clear; we just want Malaysia to honour the MoU,” said Indonesian ambassador Hermono, referring to the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two countries on April 1.
Indonesia has placed a freeze on Malaysian recruitment of Indonesian maids and other workers in protest against the continued use of the Malaysian immigration department’s Maid Online System, which he said allows tourist visas to be converted to work permits.
Hermono said continued use of the system “means all provisions of the MoU are being bypassed”.

Indonesia has insisted on the use of the One Channel System by which all applications and authorisation would go through the Indonesian embassy, allowing it to keep track of the whereabouts of its maids and prevent any abuse or forced labour.
Officials of the human resources ministry and the home ministry are to meet tomorrow to discuss the freeze at the instruction of Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who said the two ministries should resolve the impasse so that the ties between the two countries would not be affected.
Human resources minister M Saravanan had said earlier today that the two ministries would meet tomorrow.
Saravanan and his Indonesian counterpart had signed the MoU in Jakarta in April, witnessed by Ismail and Indonesian President Joko Widodo. - FMT
