PETALING JAYA: The Johor state government is seeking 20% of its tax revenue to be channelled back to the state from the federal government.
“In line with the directive of the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, the Johor state government once again appeals to the federal government to consider giving at least 20% of the state tax revenue collected back to Johor,” said Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
“This request is crucial to ensure the people of Johor continue to reap the benefits of the state’s revenue and to enable more comprehensive development initiatives,” Bernama reported him as saying during the winding-up of the Johor assembly sitting in Kota Iskandar today.
During the sitting, the state assembly approved the state’s 2025 budget of RM1.999 billion, tabled on Nov 21.

In June, Onn Hafiz had said an official request to allocate 30% of tax revenue back to Johor had been submitted to Putrajaya.
In response to a query from Johor assembly speaker Puad Zarkashi today about whether the actual request was for 20% or 30%, Onn Hafiz clarified the state government is requesting for 20% but said that even 10% would suffice for now.
He noted that the state has 56 assemblymen and it would cost the state government more than half a billion ringgit if each of them requested RM10 million in development allocation.
Onn Hafiz also announced additional initiatives under the state’s budget for next year such as the RM300,000 set aside for Dewan Muda Johor, a platform for Johor’s youth to voice criticisms, provide suggestions, and exercise checks and balances on the state’s governance.
An additional RM800,000 has been allocated for 15 military camps across Johor while RM750,000 has been set aside for the Johor police headquarters and 13 district police headquarters.
He also said RM200,000 has been allocated for the police and armed forces retiree associations. - FMT
