According to MCMC, Jendela is replanning its previous National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (NFCP), drafted before the Covid-19 pandemic and new normal practices, in light of the pandemic that brought significant changes to Internet usage patterns
Through Jendela, the targets set under the NFCP were improved and accelerated to meet the major post-COVID-19 challenges, it said
"The people of Sabah should benefit the most under the NFCP1 project and the implementation of Jendela will continue to give priority to projects to develop communication infrastructure in the state," said MCMC in a statement today
An additional 382 new communication towers, as well as upgrading of 924 communication transmitters at existing towers, are being planned under the Universal Service Provision (PPS) programme
In addition, 35 new towers and 1,048 communication transmitters will be commercially upgraded by service providers to increase 4G coverage, while 251,166 premises will also be provided with access to optical fibre
Also mentioned is the construction of a new telecommunication tower to provide 4G services to residents in Kampung Sapatalang, Pitas, Sabah, where the project implemented under NFCP1 is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2021
It was in Kampung Sapatalang that 18-year-old student from Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Veveonah Mosibin grabbed nationwide attention when she had to climb a tree to get internet connection in order to sit for an online exam. The video has since gone viral
"The successful development of communication infrastructure under Jendela is important as the foundation of digital transformation for the socio-economic survival of the country," said MCMC
On Aug 29, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Jendela will lay the foundation for comprehensive and high-quality broadband coverage facilities as well as prepare the country for the transition towards 5G technology. -- Bernama
