Malaysian Indian People Party (MIPP) deputy president S Subramaniam criticised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for the latter's “attack” on the elite and the wealthy.
The Perikatan Nasional component party leader said Anwar’s remark about the group made it as if it were a sin to be rich under the Madani government.
"Since Anwar’s first day of being a prime minister, we’ve seen him pressuring the elite and the rich with various allegations that carry the narrative that this group does not care about the government’s development and is making money illegally,” Subramaniam told Malaysiakini.
He pointed to Anwar’s recent statement that the government will not subsidise the education of children of the wealthy as well as the premier’s comments on the rich being undeserving of diesel subsidies.
ADS"Anwar's message is very clear, it is a sin if you become rich under his rule," he claimed.
S SubramaniamOn Monday, Anwar said the government is examining the distribution of education subsidies to ensure that such aid is channelled to those who really deserve them.
Anwar, who is also the finance minister, explained that the elite and the wealthy are enjoying the subsidies in the education sector.
This came ahead of the Budget 2025, which Anwar will present in the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 18.
ADSHe also previously announced that the government will end the blanket subsidy for fuel that benefits both the “maha kaya” (ultra-rich) and foreigners.
Don’t politicise education issue
Commenting further, Subramaniam said the premier should have emulated the late Abdul Khalid Ibrahim when the former Selangor menteri besar announced free water to the people of Selangor.
"When Khalid was asked why he gave free water to all, including the T20 group, Khalid replied, ‘This free water is for the people of Selangor regardless of background’.
"This is the way a leader should administer the government. Not like Anwar, who blames others to cover up his own weaknesses in administration,” he said.
At the same time, he asked the prime minister not to politicise the issue of education when it comes to scholarships and children of the rich.
"Many rich parents are still interested in sending their children to government schools. Their children achieve excellent results in exams, so they are eligible for scholarships and subsidies.
"So, what is the government's problem? Don't punish these children just because their parents are rich," he said. - Mkini
