THIRTEENTH in the English Premiership table, below the likes of Brentford and Crystal palace.
The team is regularly humiliated at Old Trafford by so-called lesser teams such as Brighton.
The stadium is leaking and infested with rodents.
Debt-ridden with its new co-owners – INEOS Group – implementing all sorts of unpopular schemes such as raising ticket prices which further alienate its fan base.
For supporters of other teams, it is with pure unadulterated glee that they are greeted with such news as they watch the once proud and arrogant Red Devils squirm in extreme embarrassment and discomfort.
But wait, there’s more.
It was revealed that Perodua had rejected the club’s request for sponsorship! Yes, the makers of the humble Bezza and Myvi said ‘NO’ to this once mighty footballing juggernaut.
Perodua chairman Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin revealed this during the launch of the National Amateur Golf Series (PNAGS) at Saujana Golf and Country Club on Thursday (Feb 13).
It was with no shortage of delight and mirth that Asmat told the media: “There have been requests, and there’s one team… I don’t know if I should say this, but I received a letter from Manchester United asking if we would put our logo on one of their shirts and sponsor them.”
Revealing his true colours as a Gunner, Asmat said: “If we do that for Manchester United, then it wouldn’t be fair to my Arsenal, you know?”
Jokes aside it is a sound business decision as Asmat explained that Perodua preferred to support non-partisan sports as to avoid alienating fans of different clubs. As reported by NST, Asmat added that Perodua’s focus was on individual sports such as golf and tennis.
A few points to note from the fallen giant’s ignominious downfall:
First, nothing lasts forever. Whether it’s in the sphere of politics, business or sports, empires crumble. History is laden with pertinent examples.
Secondly, just like Manchester United, fortunes change. Just ask die-hard Manchester United fans Khairy Jamaluddin and Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Both find themselves in the political wilderness after previously helming top cabinet positions.
Thirdly, Perodua is an example of a financially-prudent and well-run company. It is unlikely it would sink huge sums to sponsor a football team currently in the doldrums, no matter its past history.
For now, supporters of rival clubs can just enjoy the scenario as Manchester United is the gift that keeps on giving. – Focus Malaysia
