Former Felda chairman Isa Samad has been allowed to travel to the UK to attend his daughter’s convocation on March 30.PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal has allowed former Felda chairman Isa Samad’s application for the return of his passport to attend his daughter’s convocation at a university in the UK at the end of the month.
The High Court convicted him for corruption last year and he has appealed against the decision.
Isa has posted RM1.5 million bail but his passport has been impounded.
A three-member bench chaired by Kamaludin Md Said today ordered that his expired passport be returned to him on Monday for him to make a renewal.
Kamaludin, who sat with Ghazali Cha and Lee Heng Cheong, also ordered the passport be returned to the court on or before April 16.
Deputy public prosecutor Afzainizam Abdul Aziz had no objection to the application.
Lawyer Wan Azmir Wan Majid, who appeared for Isa, told the bench that Isa would leave for UK on March 26 to attend his daughter’s convocation on March 30.
Isa, 72, who is also a former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar, was convicted on Feb 3 last year on nine counts of corruption involving RM3 million related to Felda’s purchase of Merdeka Palace Hotel & Suites in Kuching, Sarawak.
He was sentenced by judge Nazlan Mohd Ghazali ( now an appellate court judge) to six years’ jail on each charge, to run concurrently, and fined RM15.45 million, in default 18 years’ jail. - FMT
