Insurance Scheme Data Breach Selangor Mb Clears The Air

Several Selangor residents who checked their IC numbers on the Insan programme website found that they were registered for the free insurance scheme without their knowledge.
However, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari clarified that the state government worked with the Election Commission, which allowed the EC to pre-register residents of the state for the programme using information from the electoral roll.
He stressed that residents were merely pre-registered to ensure smoother operation, and those who are interested would have to go through a set of procedures to activate the insurance policy.
“That is public data… (the matter) was tabled by the executive councillor at the time, Teng Chang Khim, and we have contacted the EC and the latter has said what is on the electoral roll can be used.
“That is a pre-registration (exercise), so the policies will only be activated once certain criteria have been fulfilled such as taking a selfie and a photo of the IC.
“If you are not interested, you do not have to activate it,” Amirudin (above) said at a press conference today.
Tighten security
Regarding concerns that anyone can check the insurance information as long as they have someone’s IC number, he said the state government will tighten security measures to prevent this.
As of the time of writing, Malaysiakini’s check showed the Insan programme website is currently inaccessible.
Among those concerned about data breach is netizen Fais Al-Hajari who posted on Facebook that his checks showed his late mother, who died in May 2022, was also “registered” for the Insan scheme.
“When did my mother leave her grave to register for this scheme?
“This is a very serious data breach. We will make sure those responsible for this will fall,” he said in his posting.
The Insan general insurance scheme was launched by the Selangor government last October and is implemented by Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) through its subsidiary Wavpay Fintech Holding Sdn Bhd.
No longer holds official positions
Social media influencer Muhamad Harris Nasril yesterday said he checked the information on Wavpay on the Companies Commission of Malaysia and found that Teng is one of the directors of the company.
Teng was formerly the Selangor executive councillor for industry and commerce, and small and medium enterprises.
Harris acknowledged that Teng was likely appointed as Wavpay director to represent the Selangor government.
However, he pointed out that Teng no longer holds any official positions in the state government and as such, he should step down as the company’s director.
Teng Chang KhimTeng has since responded, saying he was appointed as Wavpay director by the Selangor government meeting council.
“Wait till the council decides whether it wants to continue with my services or not. Be patient.
“Besides, I have not received any salary in Wavpay throughout my appointment. What is there to be scared of over my presence in Wavpay?” Teng said in a Facebook post.
Several social media influencers have also announced that they will be lodging police reports over this issue today, claiming that there was a misuse of personal information for the Insan insurance programme.
According to the Personal Data Protection Department, the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 shall not apply to the federal and state governments. - Mkini
