KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 — Inspired by the historic reopening of the River Seine in Paris, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif has expressed her dream of seeing the Klang River become swimmable in the near future.
Admittedly, Maimunah said what she envisioned will not materialise during her current tenure, but she expressed optimism that her dream will eventually come true.
“What I might achieve during my tenure, I hope my successor will continue (the work I have done) alongside the people with the desire of making my dream come true.

“I am looking forward to seeing Kuala Lumpur become a city for everyone — not just for humans, but also for the fauna and flora, and all levels of stakeholders such as children, young and old people, and the disabled,” she told Malay Mail after officiating the Klang River Festival 2025 here.
Earlier in her speech, Maimunah said it took Paris almost a decade to clean up the Seine — long known for its pollution — once and for all.

The Seine was later chosen to host the Olympic open-swimming competitions — marking the first time that an urban river has been used for swimming events at the Games since they were revived in 1896.
“I have seen this during my time in the United Nations. Maybe one day we can swim in the Klang River as well,” she added.
She later recalled her tenure as president of the Seberang Perai City Council in Penang and how she wanted to clean up Sungai Juru to make it swimmable back in 2012.
“People called me crazy because at that time when you threw a fish into the river it died immediately, so how could we propose a river cruise or a festival to be held there?
“But just recently, the Penang chief minister launched the river cruise. So I think it’s okay to dream,” she said.

For KRF 2025, Maimunah said she strongly supported the organisers’ endeavours as the programme is part of Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) and her vision for the city’s green connectivity initiative.
“The Klang River is one such green connectivity.”
She said she has spoken with the organisers on the need to expand and connect the riverside stretch at KRF with the existing River of Life project — a river conservation and beautification project under the federal government.
“The intention is good but we need to connect and activate it.
“We need to bring in the people, not just civil servants but those living in the surrounding areas benefiting from the river conservation efforts,” she said.
KRF 2025 is currently taking place from Sept 26 until Oct 5 here at Old Klang Road Riverside near Millerz Square.
During the festival, a 1.8-kilometre stretch of the river is transformed into a gathering place where Malaysians celebrate culture, sustainability and the enduring bond between people and the river, past and present.
