Indonesian Envoy Shocked Chained Maid Case Settled With Rm1 500 Payment
Action must be taken against the house owner for putting the maid in chains, says Indonesian ambassador Hermono. (Freepik pic)PETALING JAYA: Indonesian ambassador Hermono is livid that the case involving an Indonesian cleaner who was chained and locked in a bathroom was settled after she was paid RM1,500 by the house owner.
Hermono, who met the investigating officer at the Kajang district police headquarters this morning, said this was unacceptable as the owner had not only taken the law into his own hands but also committed a crime.
“I am shocked that the police allowed this to be settled in this manner. I urged them to take action according to the Malaysian laws but they said the cleaner cannot be found. It is their duty to find her as she must be scared of the consequences,” he told FMT.

Hermono.Hermono said police told him the owner not only chained her around the waist and legs but also locked her up in the bathroom. He then locked his house and went to her house and looked for the jewellery he alleged the cleaner had stolen.
“This is preposterous as he should have gone to the police for further action. Anyway, he did not find the valuables in the cleaner’s house. She is a part-time cleaner who works at this apartment once a month,” he said.
Hermono said it was fortunate that the neighbours heard her screams during the incident on May 21 and informed the police who had to break the door open before rescuing her from the ordeal.
Yesterday, Selangor police chief Hussein Omar confirmed the incident to Harian Metro. He said her employer suspected her of stealing jewellery from him. - FMT
