Include Songkran Day In Kedah S Tourism Calender Umno Leader
Kedah Umno has urged the state government to include the Songkran festival - which is celebrated every year in the Siamese community - in the state’s yearly tourism calendar.
“Kedah, when under the BN government, has acknowledged the contribution and support of the Siamese community in the development and security of Kedah in particular and Malaysia in general.
“Kedah Umno urges the state government to acknowledge the importance of its contribution," state Umno liaison chief Mahdzir Khalid said in a statement.
He said that the Siamese community’s contribution should not be ignored even though its numbers (are small when) compared to the other races.
Mahdzir KhalidSongkran - a water festival that is also a New Year celebration for the Siamense community - is celebrated for three days starting from April 13 every year.
According to Mahdzir, the Songkran celebration has its own uniqueness and can be a tourist attraction.
“Songkran Day can be promoted not only as a tourist attraction at state level but can also be promoted by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry.
“Our neighbour, Thailand, makes a lot of profit in the tourism sector every year through the celebration of Songkran, which is one of the most popular times for foreigners to visit that country,” he added.
Mahdzir also said that the tolerance, cooperation and harmony practised by the Siamese community have forged unity in Kedah.
Kedah has the biggest Siamese community in Malaysia, believed to number about 40,000. - Mkini
