Jegan (centre) inspecting the gas cylinders found during the raid in Kampung Jawa, Bayan Lepas - NSTP/DANIAL SAADBAYAN LEPAS: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry busted an illegal liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) siphoning operation after raiding a house in Kampung Jawa on April 18.
The 2pm raid was carried out by a team of its enforcement officers from Penang following three weeks of surveillance, Harian Metro reported.
Its state director S. Jegan said a man in his 40s was caught transferring gas from 14kg cylinders into 50kg cylinders during the raid.
A further inspection of the premises revealed a lorry containing various LPG cylinders, both full and empty, under multiple brand names.
"We also found that the premises owner failed to present any valid documents regarding the ownership and storage of the controlled goods.
"Several items used in the operation, including the lorry, were seized for further action," he said.
Jegan added that 90 LPG cylinders of various brands, weighing a total of 498kg, along with several documents were seized.
The total value of the confiscated items was estimated at RM30,546.
Preliminary investigations showed that the illegal activity had been ongoing for the past six months and was believed to have been carried out based on customer orders.
"The house, which belongs to the suspect's in-law and is located in a residential area, was used as the site for transferring the gas.
"This is considered risky as it was done without proper safety procedures.
"We will also investigate whether other individuals were involved in this activity," he said. - NST
