PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded statements from two key administrators of a Facebook group dedicated to locating Hindu temples that were allegedly built illegally nationwide.
In a statement, MCMC said the group is being used to spread information which is believed to incite racial and religious discord that can potentially cause public unrest.
MCMC said the statements of the individuals were taken at its headquarters in Cyberjaya at 9am on March 27 following public complaints. A mobile phone and SIM card were confiscated as evidence.
The Internet regulator also said it had submitted 110 requests to Meta to remove racially provocative content from the Facebook group.
“Of the 110 requests, Facebook found that 106 of the content breached its community standards and were removed,” it said.
The case is being investigated under Section 233 (1) (a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and the individuals involved could face a fine of up to RM500,000, a prison sentence of up to two years, or both, if convicted.

“Such actions not only violate the law but also threaten the harmony of the multiracial society in this country,” it said.
Land rights for old Hindu temples have become a controversial topic recently after the plan to relocate the 130-year-old Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman temple to make way for the construction of the new Masjid Madani sparked a public backlash.
The government then revealed that the temple had accepted a plot 50m away from its current site for relocation, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim calling it a “win-win solution”. - FMT
