Igp Senior Cop S Proposal To Limit Driving Licence For Elderly Is Personal View

Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said the proposal by a senior cop to limit issuing driving licences to the elderly was a personal view.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Azisman Alias had suggested that senior citizens undergo a medical check-up to ensure they are fit to get a driving licence in order to reduce the number of car accidents.
"(The) Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director had on Sept 24 made a proposal for driving licences for the elderly to be limited.
"The call is his personal suggestion within the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department and has yet to be discussed in-depth," Acryl said in a statement today.
He ensured that any policy that is implemented will go through a thorough consultation with stakeholders.
"The Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, as the department responsible for ensuring road safety, constantly looks at ways to improve safety in the interest of the people.
"Any introduction of new safety measures will only be implemented after they are studied and decided by all the stakeholders," he said.
Azisman had said that health factors could be a contribution to road accidents, particularly among the elderly.
“As people age, they are more likely to suffer from health conditions such as Alzheimer's and blurred vision which can indirectly cause accidents on the road.
“There was a case where a senior citizen was caught driving (a car) on a motorcycle lane. Therefore, the government needs to study issuing the licence to senior citizens,” he had said. - Mkini
