Igp Police To Issue Permit To Anti Icerd Rally Organisers
Police will issue a permit to the organisers of this Saturday's rally to protest against the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd)
Inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said police will issue the notice either today or tomorrow, adding that the necessary preparations will be made to ensure the rally does not disrupt public order
"Police will issue the permission notice to the organisers by today or tomorrow
"We adhere that the premise (to hold the rally) is under the purview of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall. "We will monitor and make preparations to ensure that the rally held according to the law, and does not create chaos and security issues," he told reporters during a media conference at the Police College in Cheras today
According to Fuzi, organisers have been reminded follow the rules and obey the law, including those outlined by DBKL
Yesterday, Kuala Lumpur mayor Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan said that approval was given after City Hall officials met with police and other related agencies, and on the basis that the Dec 8 rally would be held in a peaceful manner
Nor Hisham said that the rally is allowed to take place from 2pm until 6pm along Jalan Raja only, in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and Dataran Merdeka
Three NGOs – Gerakan Pembela Ummah (Ummah), Pertubuhan Muafakat Sejahtera Masyarakat Malaysia (Muafakat), and Persatuan Bekas Angkatan Tentera Tidak Berpencen Malaysia (Daulat) – submitted the application to hold the rally to DBKL on Nov 27
Organisers had previously indicated that the rally, which is being backed by Umno and PAS, would proceed despite Putrajaya deciding not to ratify Icerd
Instead, they said, the objective of the rally is to express thanks for the non-ratification of the treaty, and to ensure that there would be no future attempts to do so. - Mkini
