Ibrahim Ali Sues Company Allegedly Linked To Selangor Water Cut
Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra) president Ibrahim Ali and 16 others have filed a lawsuit against the company allegedly responsible for the current water supply disruption in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur
Law firm Messrs Azam Aziz & Co, which acts for the 17 plaintiffs, filed the Writ of Summons at the Shah Alam High Court Registry around 1.52pm this afternoon
Besides Ibrahim (above), the other 16 plaintiffs are lawyer Nur Fatin Syakinah Kamarudin; artist Razali Hussain; vehicle trader Lokman Hakim Abdul Halim; businessperson Mohd Fairiz Hezri Mohd Safri; office clerks Rifky Kesuma Suherman and Alwanizah Johari; self-employed deliveryperson Muhammad Gulam Sharif; food traders Mohamed Shahrin Ismail, Nurhamizah Zainal Abidin, Muhammad Izam Ali, Norziha Mashhor, Raja Jehana Raja Kamaruzzaman, Salwani Samat, and Mohamed Ashik Rahman Mohd Varusai; one Mazlifah Othman, and one Azhanar Aziz Abd Aziz
According to a copy of the Statement of Claim sighted by Malaysiakini today, the plaintiffs claimed that the defendant company was behind the recent water supply disruption in the state
The plaintiffs claimed that this was revealed in a media statement by Air Selangor Sdn Bhd on Sept 3
They said the media statement showed that pollution was suspected to have originated from an industrial premise at Sungai Gong which released solvents into the river, among others
The plaintiffs also alleged that the company had committed similar actions in the past by referring to an alleged fine of RM60,000 meted against the company in March this year over purported disposal of toxic waste
On Sept 4, it was reported that the factory allegedly behind the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur water disruption was a repeat offender and that it had been sealed off, pending investigations
The 17 plaintiffs said the legal action was initiated as Sungai Gong is not only a source of water for the people of Selangor but is also part of the country’s natural resources which needs to be safeguarded from any pollution
The plaintiffs claimed that until today, the defendant had not taken any steps to rectify the situation which had purportedly negatively affected the quality of life of over one million residents in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur
“Due to the incidents that (allegedly) happened as well as losses, hardship, and difficulty incurred by the above-named plaintiffs, all the plaintiffs seek from the defendant general, specific, (and) exemplary damages, cost, and any other relief deemed fit and fair by the court,” the statement of claim said
When contacted by Malaysiakini today, the plaintiffs’ lawyer Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz confirmed the filing of the suit
He said that after they have extracted sealed copies of the suit from the High Court Registry over the next two or three days, then copies of the legal action would be served on the defendant. - Mkini
