I City S Glass Water Slide Not Greenlit To Operate Says Mbsa

The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has revealed that the glass water slide at I-City Theme Park has not received approval to commence operations.
The news comes amid Shah Alam MP Azli Yusof raising concerns about its safety and a viral video of an accident involving a patron.
MBSA’s corporate and public relations division head Mohd Azhar Mohd Sharif said a notice was issued to halt construction during the building phase, but it was not complied with.
As a result, a compound was issued against I-City on Nov 14, 2024.
“This ride has not yet received approval to operate. They (I-City) need to submit a planning permission application and a temporary permit.
“I-City was fined for failing to obtain approval before operating. A notice was issued to stop during construction, but they did not comply, so MBSA issued a compound.
“The stop-work notice and compound were issued on Nov 14 last year. This ride will be required to cease operations,” Azhar told Sinar Harian.
Yesterday, Azli took to X to state that he spotted the new attraction as he went to pick up his child at the I-City Mall.
Shah Alam MP Azli Yusof“As I passed through the theme park area, I noticed a new attraction - SkyPark I-City. It appears to be a water-themed ride resembling a roller coaster. It looked impressive and vibrant at night, sure to attract many visitors.
“But the question is: Is it safe? I share the same concerns raised by many netizens over the past few days. Typically, structures like this require high design and construction standards, along with rigorous inspections,” he added.
Azli said he contacted MBSA to enquire if the ride had received approval to operate.
“Has it undergone proper inspections and received clearance from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (Dosh)?
“As the MP for Shah Alam, I do not want any unforeseen accidents to occur due to negligence in adhering to construction regulations and operational safety requirements.
“I urge MBSA to take a firm stance on this matter for the safety of the public,” he added.
Previously, it was reported that the slide begins at the top of a 60m-tall tower, making it the tallest of its kind in the country.
Cops commence investigations
Meanwhile, Shah Alam district police chief Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said a report was received at 1.08am today after the 13-second video went viral on social media.
A float from the water slide was believed to have fallen on a patron on Wednesday (Jan 29) at about 11pm, he said, adding that the victim was visiting the theme park with family.
I-CityIn the incident, the woman in her 20s was said to be walking across the bottom portion of the water slide when an inflatable float fell and hit the victim on her side.
Mohd Iqbal pointed out that the 600m-long slide is 60m at its highest point and the height from which the float fell is under investigation.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 6 of the Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment over operating without a licence which may be punished with a maximum fine of RM25,000, or imprisonment up to three years.
The investigation is also under under Section 337 of the Penal Code which involves causing hurt to another person by rash or negligent acts, which may be punished with imprisonment for up to six months, a fine, or both.
MBSA’s notices to I-City
In a statement today, MBSA revealed that over seven notices had been issued to the theme park management, including a warning notice on Jan 19 ordering the immediate cessation of the glass water slide operation.
“Despite the notice being issued, subsequent monitoring found that the management continued the entertainment activity without written approval, defying the directive.
“As a result, on Jan 30, the council issued a Non-Compliance Compound Notice under Section 121 of the Street, Drainage, and Building Act 1974 (Act 133) for failing to adhere to the directive,” the statement read.
Among the other notices were ordering the immediate halt of construction, the demolition of non-compliant structures, the cessation of all development activities carried out without planning permission, and the restoration of the land to its original state after the management failed to obtain the necessary approvals.
Expressing regret over the Jan 29 incident, MBSA reaffirmed its commitment to prioritising public safety and ensuring strict compliance with laws and regulations.
“In light of this, the council will continue to closely monitor the situation and take firm action against any party that violates established regulations to safeguard public safety and well-being.
“MBSA also urges all theme park operators and related industry players to comply with the prescribed regulations to ensure the safety and welfare of the public,” it concluded. - Mkini
