Sabah Youth Council president, Abqaree Fawwaz said this when referring to today's High Court ruling in favour of three former students who had filed a lawsuit against their teacher from SMK Taun Gusi in Kota Belud.
"What those students did is correct as they did not receive their right to education.
"By right, the school administration should be blamed. If there was no English teacher, there should have been a replacement.
"In this case, when a teacher was absent for seven months, disciplinary action should have been taken, and someone should have replaced him.
"It is strange that such an incident was allowed to continue for such a long period," he told the New Straits Times.
Abqaree added that at the school level, the headmaster or principal should have been more alert in addressing such issues.
He said the school administration should have requested more replacement teachers if there were not enough staff.
"If teachers decide to be absent, it is never the students' problem.
"The administration needs to look into how to solve the absence or lack of teachers, especially in subjects like English.
"We believe there are many who can teach. Our teaching institute has many qualified trainees." - NST
