Harapan Calls On Macc To Probe Revived Gas Pipeline Project

Pakatan Harapan wants the MACC to investigate why Putrajaya revived the tainted Trans Sabah Gas Pipeline (TSGP) and Multi-Product Pipeline (MPP) but chose to axe the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur High Speed Rail (HSR) project.
"It is a must for the MACC to investigate this thoroughly," the Harapan presidential council said in a statement today.
The statement was signed by coalition party leaders Anwar Ibrahim (PKR), Mohamad Sabu (Amanah), Lim Guan Eng (DAP) and Wilfred Madius Tangau (Upko).
The TSGP and MPP pipeline projects were cancelled in 2018 when Harapan was in power.
The construction of the TSGP and MPP were approved by the previous BN administration, who awarded the projects to the China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau in November 2016.
The project was undertaken by Suria Strategic Energy Resources (SSER) - a fully-owned subsidiary of the Finance Ministry set up in 2016 for the sole purpose of overseeing the implementation of the TSGP and MPP.
The 662km TSGP would have stretched from the Kimanis Gas Terminal to Sandakan and Tawau. The 600km MPP, meanwhile, would have connected various petrochemical projects in Malacca and Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan to Jitra, Kedah.
A total of RM8.3billion - 88 percent of the construction cost - was paid out for the two projects, despite just 13 percent of work completed.
SSER was fined for failing to comply with Bank Negara conditions in relation to the pipeline projects in 2019

It was recently revealed that former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin had secretly revived both projects in February.
Ramp up effort on Pandora Papers probe
Harapan also called on the anti-graft body to intensify its efforts in probing the Pandora Papers.
The Pandora Papers had leaked documents belonging to financial service firms that facilitate the wealthy in setting up and managing offshore entities.
The documents were released by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
It is not illegal to own an offshore entity but they can potentially be abused to conceal wealth abroad or used for tax evasion.
Among the high-profile individuals named in the Pandora Papers were Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PKR's Selayang MP William Leong.

They have all denied wrongdoing and maintained the entities were used for legitimate purposes. - Mkini
