Halal Certification Of Meat Doesn T Apply To Entire Sandwich Says Jakim
Jakim urged business operators to remain vigilant and adhere to the relevant legal provisions to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
PETALING JAYA: While the meat used in the pre-packed chicken ham and cheese sandwich sold at a KK Mart in Universiti Malaya may be certified as halal, this does not qualify the entire product as such, the Islamic development department (Jakim) says.
Jakim director-general Sirajuddin Suhaimee said no product or service could be described as halal or carry a halal logo without verification and certification by the department.
“Products can only be certified as halal by the authorised body once they comply with Malaysia’s halal certification standards and procedures, which encompass the overall handling, preparation, and processing aspects,” he said in a statement.
He also urged business operators to remain vigilant and adhere to the relevant legal provisions to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
Shake and Bake Café Sdn Bhd, the supplier of the sandwiches at the heart of the controversy, had said that the sliced meat used in its sandwiches was certified as halal by Jakim.
It also confirmed that the federal territories branch of the domestic trade and cost of living ministry, together with Jakim, had raided its factory last Friday.
It pledged its full cooperation with the ministry and Jakim throughout their probe.
Jakim previously said that neither the sandwiches in question nor the manufacturing company had halal certification.
The domestic trade and cost of living ministry also found that the halal logo on the packaging was from the certification issued to another company, which was no longer operating and had sold its business to the firm that was raided. - FMT
