Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah president Hajiji Noor said the proposed electoral pacts will be reviewed after discussions with GRS and Pakatan Harapan.PETALING JAYA: Several parties have expressed interest in joining forces with Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah for the state assembly elections, PGRS president Hajiji Noor said today
He said certain parties had even proposed seat allocations. “There are many parties lobbying for cooperation, some even mentioning large numbers of seats,” The Borneo Post quoted him as saying.
Hajiji’s party is the dominant member of the ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah coalition, of which he is chairman.
He said the proposed electoral pacts will be reviewed after discussions with GRS and Pakatan Harapan, its partner in the state government.
Despite the ongoing negotiations, Hajiji urged party members to focus on election preparations and to rally behind the candidates once final decisions are made.
“I call on members to put aside personal interests and work hard to ensure our candidates win.”
GRS and Barisan Nasional are currently courting PH for an alliance for the elections. PH had previously said it will decide on the matter closer to the elections, which must be held by early February at the latest.
Last week, Hajiji indicated that GRS still favours working with PH. However, Sabah BN chairman Bung Moktar Radin said yesterday that talks with PH on electoral cooperation have already begun, less than two weeks after declaring that the two coalitions would be working together.
The current state government is formed by GRS, which has 42 seats in the 79-seat state assembly, in partnership with PH (7 seats) and the support of three assemblymen from Umno and two assemblymen from minor parties.
The opposition comprises Warisan (14 seats) and BN (9).
The term of the current state assembly expires on Nov 11, and elections must be held within 60 days after the expiry of its term, or unless it is dissolved earlier. - FMT
