It was reported that PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang (left) had stated in a letter to the late Islamic scholar Yusuf Qardawi that Anwar Ibrahim was a Freemason.PETALING JAYA: Abdul Hadi Awang’s office has denied that the PAS president had ever called PKR president Anwar Ibrahim a Freemason.
In a statement, Hadi’s office said these accusations were baseless, adding that the party will not resort to political slander.
“We have been called upon to deny this allegation and state on record that the PAS president has never said this,” it said.
During a speech yesterday, Anwar, in an attempt to demonstrate that Hadi’s words should not be taken at face value, claimed that he had been called a Freemason.

Previously, PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil claimed that Hadi had stated in a letter to the late Islamic scholar Yusuf Qardawi that Anwar was a Freemason, only to discover later that there was another individual in the group who shared the same name as Anwar.
Fahmi said Hadi had not admitted his mistake and that the head of the Islamic party owed Anwar an apology for the false accusation.
Last Thursday, Pakatan Harapan leaders slammed Hadi over his claim that the DAP was “pro-communist”, with DAP national chairman Lim Guan Eng saying the PAS president’s allegation was “pure fakery” and reeked of hypocrisy.
Lim said if PAS was dead set against communism, it should train its guns on Umno, which had sent its representatives to attend the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) meetings.
He also said PAS should never be allowed to be part of the next government as it was a racist and extremist party. - FMT
