Guan Eng Holds Back Tears In Swan Song Speech
Outgoing DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng today delivered his swan song after serving in the position for 18 years.
In his final policy speech to the DAP Congress as the secretary-general, Lim thanked party members for their support during his tenure.
He later bowed to party delegates on stage and was greeted with a standing ovation.
“I am proud that I handed over a stronger DAP to the next secretary-general because DAP is now the largest party in Parliament.
“I will support the new secretary-general and work together with the new generation of DAP leaders to build our party and to work with like-minded allies for a better Malaysian Malaysia.
“We want the new secretary-general to succeed so that the party can grow,” he said at the DAP Congress in Shah Alam today.
He also thanked DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang for his contributions. Kit Siang, who is also Guan Eng’s father, announced his retirement from politics at the congress.
“DAP is very grateful that we have our first generation leader Kit Siang still with us to guide us with his wisdom and his insights,” Guan Eng said.
DAP veteran Lim Kit SiangGuan Eng appeared to hold back tears and choked up as he spoke about Kit Siang.
He also urged party members not to be disheartened by the current political situation after DAP and its Pakatan Harapan allies were ousted from power and faced a series of electoral setbacks.
“I know we are dejected at the infamous Sheraton Move that caused us to lose power in the federal government and some state governments after our historic victory in the 2018 general election, as well as the disappointing results of Harapan in the recent Malacca, Sarawak and Johor elections.
“We should take heart that our situation when we were in the opposition before 2008 was worse,” he said.
Guan Eng had to step down as the secretary-general due to a three-term limit set by the party constitution.
However, he will still be contesting for a position in the central executive committee.
A total of 92 candidates are vying for 30 spots on the central executive committee.
The DAP electoral system follows a two-tier system where members will elect their top 30 candidates to the central executive committee instead of specific positions.
The elected top 30 will later then elect among themselves to fill the respective positions in the party. - Mkini
