Govt To Table Freedom Of Information Act By 2025 Pm
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that the government will table the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) in Parliament by 2025, as part of its efforts to enhance transparency in public administration.
The proposal was deliberated during the National Governance Special Cabinet Committee (JKKTN) meeting that he chaired today.
In a Facebook posting, Anwar stressed that the FOI Act aims to enshrine individuals’ legal right to access government-held information.
The FOI Act is a legal framework that empowers citizens to request and access information held by government bodies, subject to defined exemptions.
Globally, FOI laws are recognised as vital tools for promoting transparency, accountability, and anti-corruption efforts.
In Malaysia, the push for a comprehensive FOI Act has been ongoing for years. Existing access to information laws are often constrained by the Official Secrets Act (OSA), which restricts public access to government documents.
Critics have argued that these limitations impede efforts to hold public officials accountable and create obstacles to good governance.
According to Anwar, today’s meeting also acknowledged the establishment of a Corruption Perception Index (CPI) Task Force, led by the chief secretary to the government.
“This step has been taken to improve the country’s image and perception regarding good governance in the public sector at the international level, particularly among foreign investors.
“It is the government’s commitment to continuously strengthen the national good governance agenda, enhance integrity, and combat corruption in line with the aspirations of Malaysia Madani.” - Mkini
