PETALING JAYA: The government has approved the expansion of Chinese and Tamil language training programmes at teacher training institutes, alongside the national language.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said this initiative would enable the education ministry to train more teachers in these languages to ensure sufficient staffing for Tamil and Chinese national-type schools.
He also said the government had implemented initiatives to empower the people economically without marginalising any race in the country.
This includes programmes for the Indian community, said Anwar, who is also finance minister.
“I mention this in Sungai Siput this afternoon because we (the government) do all this, but there’s no appreciation at all.
“It’s as if we do not care, that we ask for the support of the Indian community only before elections, but don’t care about them now.
Who said (the government) doesn’t care? When I say (help must be given to the) hardcore poor, I mean for everyone, he said when officiating the opening of SJKT Heawood in Sungai Siput today, reported Bernama.
Also present were Perak menteri besar Saarani Mohamad and deputy education minister Wong Kah Woh.
Last month, Anwar said the government’s commitment to the Indian community would continue through Budget 2025, which would be presented on Oct 18.
He also said the government had never neglected the welfare of the Indian community and was continuously looking into improving all key aspects, including education, places of worship and employment opportunities.
He also cited past allocations given to the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit and increased funding for programmes such as the National Entrepreneurial Group Economic Fund and Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia. - FMT
