PETALING JAYA: Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi has urged Chinese voters in Mahkota to refrain from making emotional decisions and boycotting this Saturday’s by-election.
Speaking at a meeting of the Chinese business association and community in Kluang, he urged voters to think rationally and not be swayed by sentiments on social media, which could send negative signals to investors.
I am saddened when I hear talk about Chinese voters boycotting the Barisan Nasional candidate. This sends a message to investors that Johor is unstable and not welcoming, which is not true, he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.
Onn Hafiz said there was a need to demonstrate the Johor government’s stability and ensure all its economic development plans can be implemented, especially those involving foreign investors.
We all want to develop Johor’s economy. Many of you here are business owners, association chairmen and community leaders. I urge you to consider the bigger picture for the good of the state, he said.
Onn Hafiz urged voters to put aside their emotions for the benefit of Johor.
Last Saturday, Kluang MP Wong Shu Qi said poison-pen letters urging Chinese voters in the Mahkota state constituency not to cast their votes at the Sept 28 by-election were being distributed.
The Mahkota by-election is a contest between Barisan Nasional’s candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah and Perikatan Nasional’s candidate Haizan Jaafar.
The by-election was called following the death of assemblyman Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, on Aug 2. - FMT
