Govt Allocates Rm11 5m To Upgrade Kelantan Drainage System
The government, through the Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Ministry, has allocated RM11.5 million to upgrade four drainage systems in Kelantan to tackle the issue of floods.
Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the four projects in the east coast state would be implemented beginning mid-July.
He said the projects involve constructing and preparing drainage systems to prevent flooding from Baruh Kadok to Pasar Batu 8.
The projects include upgrading the drainage system in Taman Wadi Iman and Kok Lanas, the construction of drainage in Kampung Kota and the area behind the Kubang Kerian State Palace.
"These projects involve upgrading concrete drains, repairing roads and culvert covers, relocating utilities such as Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, and Telekom Malaysia, as well as other related works," he said in a briefing in Kota Bharu today.
Nik Nazmi highlighted that the project involving the stretch from Baruh Kadok to Batu 8 would resolve flash flood issues caused by blocked drainage during the monsoon season and heavy rains.
"This situation causes water to accumulate from the 12ha of Baruh Kadok to Pasar Batu 8, leading to floods. Traffic flow from Jalan Kota Bharu to Kuala Krai is also affected.
"The other three projects in Kampung Kota, the area behind the Kubang Kerian State Palace, and Taman Wadi Iman, Kok Lanas, are expected to be completed by the middle of next year.
"When fully completed, the 452ha flood-prone area is expected to be reduced, benefiting 7,300 residents," he said.
Furthermore, Nik Nazmi mentioned that flood mitigation projects take precedence within his ministry as part of their efforts to address the nation's flood-related challenges.
He said the ministry’s biggest budget is allocated for flood mitigation, emphasising proactive measures over reactive ones to prevent floods.
"Therefore, we will make plans, including discussions with the State Development Action Council as it involves local authorities," he added. - Mkini
