In expressing hope that the federal government will provide a special allocation to repair the public infrastructure and properties damaged by floods in Johor, state ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar recounted his ride along the pothole-riddled Pasir Gudang Highway as well as from Jalan Johor to Mersing.
Noting how the road conditions posed a danger to motorists, he said: “Habis rim kereta saya pun bengkok (gone, my car rims are dented).”
Sultan Ibrahim said numerous places have still not recovered from the Feb 28 floods, especially Batu Pahat.
Apart from the special allocation from Putrajaya, the ruler said: “I also appeal to the public to provide assistance and contributions to the flood victims so that they can repair their houses as well as replace the furniture and appliances destroyed by the floods.”
According to Bernama, Sultan Ibrahim, who was officiating at the first meeting of the Johor state legislative assembly, said the floods are the result of climate change.
Therefore, he urged the people of the state to be more environmentally conscious and reduce pollution.
On the same note, Sultan Ibrahim also thanked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the federal government and all quarters for their assistance and contributions to the people of Johor during the crisis.
“Thanks to the prime minister who promptly provided financial allocation to alleviate the burden of the victims and for approving the flood mitigation projects in Kota Tinggi, Batu Pahat and Segamat to be carried out immediately.
“I wish to also express appreciation to all the personnel who worked tirelessly, night and day, to help and rescue flood victims,” he added.
Sultan Ibrahim also underscored the importance of volunteers’ contributions from all over the country.
“I am very proud of the spirit of cooperation and help offered regardless of race and religion. This is the culture we must defend,” he added. - Mkini
