PETALING JAYA: Tenaga Nasional Berhad will coordinate with Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung to reach out to the 45 homeowners and businesses affected by illegal Bitcoin mining activities.
“TNB will contact Lee with plans to engage with each affected property owner to find the best solution,” it said in a statement.
The utility giant was responding to a report in FMT yesterday.
It said the public may send a private message via the TNB Careline Facebook page or call TNB at 1-300-88-5454 between 8am and 7pm on weekdays, or between 8am and 5pm on weekends and public holidays.
“We would like to remind property owners to submit a change of tenancy application to TNB whenever a new tenant occupies their premises.
“This step can help prevent any disputes or liabilities related to electricity accounts in the future,” it said.
Yesterday, FMT reported that 45 homeowners and businesses lost RM8.5 million in electricity charges due to tenants using their premises for illegal activities.
The victims claim they were unaware of the operations until they received notices from TNB, leaving many in financial and emotional distress.
Lee, who was present at the press conference, urged TNB to form a task force to investigate Bitcoin mining activities.
The PKR MP said he will propose amendments to the Electricity Supply Act 1990 at the Dewan Rakyat meeting next month.
He said the amendments will aim at strengthening enforcement against fraudulent activities, improve customer verification processes, and mandate monitoring systems for unusual power consumption. - FMT
