PETALING JAYA: A government MP has called for the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) to be given more resources and greater authority so that it can respond more effectively to natural disasters.
Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid said Nadma had a key role in disaster response but could not perform its role well if it did not have the right tools.
“We must prioritise better training for responders, provide modern equipment, and streamline coordination between federal, state and local governments. Delays in aid and fragmented communication only worsen the impact of disasters.
“We must empower Nadma with the resources and authority to lead effective disaster responses,” she said in a statement, citing recurrent floods that have displaced thousands of Malaysians.
Syerleena said Malaysia could learn from Cuba’s disaster management, pointing out that “disaster risk reduction” was something taught in its education system.
She added that the Cuban government educated students through drills and risk reduction plans in their schools and local communities.
She said the authorities there were also allowed to requisition private assets, such as vehicles, equipment and facilities, for use during disasters.
“This ensures that all available resources are mobilised swiftly and efficiently. Malaysia should consider adopting similar policies.
“Imagine the difference if private sector resources, such as transport vehicles and machinery, could be lawfully utilised to support rescue efforts,” Syerleena said.
“Disaster management is about more than response. It is about readiness, resilience and responsibility.” - FMT
