(Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: A former deputy minister has called on Putrajaya to immediately approve at least RM1,000 in cash aid for those affected by yesterday’s flash floods in Kuala Lumpur.
Hannah Yeoh said many homes in the capital had been inundated in two feet of water and victims were forced to get rid of ruined furniture and mattresses. School bags and books were destroyed while vehicles were damaged.
“The flood has greatly affected those preparing to celebrate Hari Raya and I urge the prime minister and federal territories minister to immediately approve at least RM1,000 in cash aid for the victims,” the former deputy women, family and community development minister said in a statement.
The Segambut MP from DAP went on to say there was a need to find a solution to the flooding in the capital, which had become more critical. Damage, she noted, came up to “millions” of ringgit every time there was a flood.
“The heavy rainfall can no longer be cited as an excuse,” she said in calling on the government to change its modus operandi.
Yesterday, City Hall (DBKL) said several roads were inundated by floodwaters, including Jalan Pudu, Jalan Kuching and Jalan Ampang.
It also confirmed reports of flooding at Jalan Travers, Jalan Sultan Abdul Halim, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Semantan, Pintasan Segambut, Jalan Segambut, Jalan Kinabalu (Bulatan Merdeka), Jalan Changkat Thambi Dollah, Lebuhraya Sultan Iskandar, Bulatan Dato Onn and Jalan Melaka.
On March 7 and 8, several areas in Kuala Lumpur were also badly affected by flash floods following a heavy downpour. - FMT
