(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: The Gerik-Jeli road, which has come under criticism for its poor condition, is under the jurisdiction of the federal government, not the state, says Perak menteri besar Saarani Mohamad.
He said motorists often mistook the maintenance of the stretch of road that is within the state as being the responsibility of the Perak government, Bernama reported.
“Many are unsure whether the Gerik-Jeli stretch is a state or federal road.
“We have two types of roads, namely federal and state under the Federal Constitution. Perak’s allocation for road maintenance will be used for state roads.
“There is a separate allocation from Putrajaya for the upkeep of federal roads. We can’t use state funds for federal roads and vice versa,” Bernama reported him as saying after a function last night.
He said that any road improvement or maintenance work was under the jurisdiction of the works ministry.
Saarani was commenting on complaints on social media by motorists that the Gerik-Jeli stretch was in bad shape and thus posed a risk to their safety.
He said the state government had raised the issue of the poor state of the stretch of road to the federal government following frequent complaints from motorists pertaining to its bad and unsafe conditions as well as frequent road accidents.
Saarani added that he highlighted the problem in a meeting between menteris besar, chief ministers, the Sarawak premier, and the prime minister in February.
“Based on the discussions at the meeting, the problem has been taken into account. There will be provisions made to repair and maintain the road from Gerik to Jeli,” he added. - FMT
