Gerakan S Lau To Run In Penang Confident Of Booting Out Harapan
Gerakan president Dominic Lau has confirmed he will run as a Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate in the upcoming Penang legislative assembly election.
According to Bernama, Lau said he plans to contest for one of the state constituencies in the Seberang Perai area.
"I will (formally) announce my candidacy after the legislative assembly is dissolved," he told reporters after officiating his party’s Penang annual delegates meeting today.
Lau made his electoral debut in 2013 as a BN candidate for the Batu parliamentary constituency in a losing effort. He was BN's candidate for the same seat in 2018 and fared even worse.
He sat out the 2022 parliamentary elections, choosing instead to serve out his senatorship which expires in November 2024. Lau is one of two Gerakan senators.
Lau, who was raised in Penang, was widely speculated to be eyeing the Bukit Tengah state seat, which was once considered a Gerakan stronghold until 2008.
The Penang legislative assembly is scheduled for dissolution on June 28.
Meanwhile, Lau said Gerakan will only be fielding candidates in Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, and Kedah.
"Gerakan is not fielding candidates in Kelantan and Terengganu because during the last parliamentary elections, (PN) used the PAS logo.
"Secondly, Bersatu and PAS are the incumbents there. Incumbents are given priority when choosing candidates," he said.
Lau also said the division of seats among PN parties will be finalised by June 22.
‘DAP delivered nothing’
In a statement later, Lau said Gerakan was confident of ousting Pakatan Harapan from Penang in the coming election.
He alleged Harapan, particularly the DAP, has failed to deliver on any of their election promises.
"I believe we have given enough time to DAP. It was not just five years but 15 years without any changes for the people of Penang.
"If they are incompetent, give the state back to Gerakan. DAP only knows how to talk but they have never delivered on a single promise to Penang," said Lau.
He said if Gerakan wins the peoples' mandate, the party will ensure every family owns a home and focus on developing the mainland side of the state.
"We are planning to create a science park in collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia. We want to resume former chief minister Koh Tsu Koon's vision to turn Batu Kawan into the most important industrial zone for Penang," he said. - Mkini
