Friday Notes From The Quran Peace Versus Rest In Pieces
Non-Muslim readers can skip this post. Or you may wish to read it - this one is not too technical.
I am writing this just after the late Queen Elizabeth's funeral, after that kerfuffle about resting in peace and such. But it will be posted next Friday (23/9). The Fridays are going by so quickly.
Here is the story from the Quran about Abraham and his father. Sura 19:46 and 19:47. Abraham's father worshipped idols and Abraham had implored his father to stop doing so. In return his father threatened to stone Abraham to death (19:46).
Obviously his father was not a believer.
In the next verse 19:47 Abraham the clement son, tells his father SALAMUN ALAYKA (Peace be upon you).
The following verse [28:55] describes muslims (from 28:53) when they encounter the vain talk of the ignorant people (JAHIL) :
"And when they hear vain talk they turn away from it and they say 'For us shall be our deeds and for you shall be your deeds'. SALAMUN ALAYKUM (Peace be upon you). We do not seek the ignorant (jahileen)" - Surah 28:55.
The Muslims tell the JAHIL people 'Peace be upon you' and leave them alone.
So we have here two examples of believers saying 'Peace be upon you' to non-believers ie Abraham speaking to his father and Muslims speaking to the JAHIL or ignorant.
Finally here is Sura 2:62
2:62 "Surely, those who believe, those who are Jewish, the Nasarenes and the Sabians; anyone who believes in Allah, and believes in the Last Day, and works righteousness, for them shall be rewards by their Lord. And no fear shall be upon them and they shall not grieve".
I would like to end this post with something to ponder.
Sura 2:62 mentions the Jews and the Nasarenes. So surely this verse can be read out to the Jews and Nasarenes as well.
The views expressed are those of the writer and do not necessarily reflect those of MMKtT.
