Former Cm Backs Sabah Umno S Continued Support For State Govt
Former Sabah chief minister Salleh Said Keruak said GRS’ focus should be to speed up the vaccination process and overcome the problems caused by the spread of Covid-19 in the state.PETALING JAYA: Former Sabah chief minister Salleh Said Keruak has backed Sabah Umno’s stand to support the Bersatu-led state government despite the two parties warring at the federal level.
“In my view, we should protect GRS (the governing coalition) and the mandate from Sabahans to be a responsible government,” he said in a Facebook post.
“GRS’ focus is to speed up the vaccination process and overcome the problems caused by the spread of Covid-19 in Sabah.”
This comes after Sabah Umno released a statement yesterday in support of the state government under the leadership of chief minister Hajiji Noor of Bersatu.
Umno and Bersatu have been at loggerheads at the federal level for some time, with tensions seeming to intensify over the last week.
On Tuesday, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the party’s Supreme Council had decided to withdraw support for the Perikatan Nasional-led government, which called into question Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s majority to govern.
Despite Zahid’s claims that a number of the party’s MPs had submitted statutory declarations to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong indicating they no longer supported the government, Muhyiddin insisted on Thursday that he was confident in his majority and would put it to the test at September’s Parliament sitting.
Then, on Friday, deputy prime minister and Umno veep Ismail Sabri Yakoob claimed that 31 Barisan Nasional MPs, including ministers from Umno, were still backing Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration. - FMT
