Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said that a similar concept to book vouchers for the students can be emulated for the initiative.
"We tried this year to provide some incentive or subsidy for students to fly back (during festival break), but the Finance Ministry did not approve it.
"We will try again for next year to provide credit aid for the flights, similar to the book aid," he said during 'Town Hall Rakyat bersama Anthony Loke' session organised by Sinar Harian today.
He was responding to a question by a student on high flight ticket prices offered by the airline companies during the festival period.
He also said that the government will continue to push for more flights to be made available for students to fly during the period.
During the recent Chinese New Year period, extra flights were offered at a fixed rate to allow students to return to their hometown.
However, he acknowledged that it was also limited.
"It was first come first serve basis, but we hope more flights can be added to help our students to balik kampung," he added.
High ticket prices during festival period has been a concern amongst the tertiary students almost every year who wanted to fly back to their home.
This has prompted the government to intervene in order for the airline companies to offer flights at discounted prices.
Prior to the Chinese New Year break, some students complained of the high ticket price, one being around RM700 just for one way between Penang and Sarawak. - NST
