Fire Department Urges Caution Home And Travel Safety Tips For Cny

PETALING JAYA: The highways are clear and toll prices are still at discounted rates.
For some, Wednesday (Jan 29) may be the best time to head back to their hometowns as the traffic crawls due to the Chinese New Year celebrations may have passed for now.
Before you make the drive, however, it will be worth doing a thorough sweep of your home to mitigate any risk of mishaps there while away, the Fire and Rescue Department has advised.
Department director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad urged the public to survey inside their homes and surrounding areas as well.
“Inspect all electrical appliances, gas and safety systems at home.
“Make sure no flammable materials are left exposed,” he said.
He said any unused electrical appliances, especially heat-inducing ones like water heaters and ovens, should be unplugged from their sockets.
“Periodic inspections should also be conducted on wiring systems at home.
“Also do not leave any switched-on electrical appliance unattended,” he said.

For flammable items like petrol, lubricants or chemicals that could be lying around the house or premise, Nor Hisham stressed that such items should be securely kept away from fire sources.
“Flammables should be sealed tight in a closed container and far from risky locations,” he said.
With fireworks being a part of Chinese New Year Celebrations, Nor Hisham urged the public to only use them in safe and secure areas.
He said flames from items like lit candles or kitchen stoves must also not be left unattended.
“Lit candles can cause fires if they are placed too close to flammable items or left unattended,” he said.
He also urged road users to ensure their vehicles are fully inspected before hitting the road.
“Make sure the oil levels, tyres, brake systems and lighting are working appropriately.
“Don't drive in a rush, obey the speed limit and rest when needed.
“If possible, have a small fire extinguisher with you and keep an emergency response number on hand for easy access when needed,” he said. - Star
