Fahmi Explains Why Nurul Izzah Was On Pm S Trip

PUTRAJAYA: The prime minister’s daughter, Nurul Izzah Anwar, accompanied her father on a series of recent overseas visits at the invitation of event organisers, government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil said today.
He said Nurul Izzah, who is Anwar Ibrahim’s eldest daughter, was invited to the events after the prime minister’s wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, was unable to fulfill the invitations.
Nurul Izzah was seen taking part at several events during Anwar’s 11-day trip on official visits to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Peru, and Brazil earlier this month.
Fahmi said: “I have received confirmation from the prime minister’s chief press secretary that Nurul Izzah and Faiz Abdullah, chairman of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies, were invited by the organisers.
He said Nurul Izzah was invited partly because Wan Azizah did not join the delegation. Nurul Izzah was invited in her capacity as the director of the Social and Economic Research Initiative (Seri).
When asked to comment on Nurul Izzah’s contribution to the visit, Fahmi said he did not have the information. FMT has sought details on which events Nurul Izzah was invited to.
During the visit, Anwar led the Malaysian delegation to key events such as the 31st Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation economic leaders’ week in Lima, Peru, and the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Fahmi has been asked to comment on social media posts showing Nurul Izzah accompanying Anwar’s delegation.
Yesterday, Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal questioned why Nurul Izzah was seen at events alongside Anwar during his trip, and asked whether her trip was funded by the government.
Nurul Izzah previously said she would be in Egypt, Peru, and Brazil on behalf of Seri for work-related visits.
In a Facebook post on Nov 9, Nurul Izzah said she would meet representatives from the Third World Network, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, and Al-Azhar University to “consolidate efforts to support developing nations and promote economic solidarity”. - FMT
