Ex Ldp Mates File Rival Police Reports Over 1mdb Money
Former LDP presidents Liew Vui Kong and Teo Chee Kang.KOTA KINABALU: A dispute over who had cashed RM3.5 million allegedly from scandal-hit 1Malaysia Development Berhad has led to police reports being filed by a federal minister, two of his former comrades in the Liberal Democratic Party, and by his private secretary
The money was purportedly given to the LDP as funds for contesting the 2013 general election
But de facto law minister Liew Vui Keong, then LDP president, and his successor Teo Chee Kang are pointing fingers about who had cashed the money,Liew and Teo both denied having touched any of the monies given to LDP between 2012 and 2014. They now want the police to investigate and reveal who had cashed out the funds
Teo filed the report in Lahad Datu on Friday together with former secretary-general Fong Keng Sin. They asked the police to investigate whether there had been any wrongdoing into the withdrawals. “We just want to clear our names,” said Teo
The High Court in Kuala Lumpur recently ordered the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission to return RM500,000 of LDP funds that was forfeited by the MACC in June
Teo noted that the MACC application had said that the RM3.5 million was directed to LDP through Liew and the money was withdrawn while he was still the party president at the time
LDP said the funds were given to the party by former prime minister Najib Razak between 2012 and 2013, and withdrawals of RM2 million and RM1.01 million were made during that period
Liew, who has denied having cashed the funds, told FMT: “I will let the police investigate this.”He was LDP president from 2006 to 2014 and was ousted from LDP after the 2013 general election
He had said last week that he would lodge a police report after current LDP president and treasurer Fong Keng Sin filed two affidavits stating that Liew had signed two cheques on May 2 and May 3, 2013
The first cheque was for RM910,000 and the second for RM100,000
“This is slander and they have given false statements in the affidavit,” said Liew, adding that he had obtained copies of the cheques, and they did not bear his signature
Liew said only one mandatory signature was needed, and the cheques bore the signatures of Fong, Chin Su Pin, and Teo
A police report was also filed by Liew’s private secretary, Mohd Hanafiah Sahih Montoi, who said Liew had only instructed that a cheque of RM2 million be issued for distribution to election candidates Teo Chee Kang (Tanjung Kapor), Pang Nyuk Ming (Merotai), Chin Su Pin (Likas), Charlie Pang (Karamunting), the party’s election director, and himself for the Sandakan Parliamentary seat
Liew was ousted after the 2013 general election and was succeeded by Teo, who led the party in the 2018 general election but the party lost all seats contested. Teo resigned as president and was replaced by Chin. - FMT
